The EMU Story

Why are safety glasses so ugly and uncomfortable? That's the question our Founder, a HR and Safety Manager would say over and over. With a passion for keeping people safe and hearing constantly how uncomfortable safety glasses were over and over - It was a lightbulb moment!

This moment kicked off a journey to create fashionable and comfortable safety glasses that were safe to wear whilst working on building sites and mine sites and fashionable enough to wear to the beach or the pub and of course were comfortable enough to wear all day.

The Beginning

EMU Safety Glasses was a passion project from the start. Creating fashionable safety glasses was a challenge. Being a HR and Safety Manager I knew the safety standards but creating a product that looked good, are comfortable and met the standards was a challenge.

Firstly, finding a manufacturer that I could trust and who would work with me to bring my vision to life took time. After a few false starts I was able to find a manufacturer who understood the safety standards and was willing to work with me to create our first design - The Originals.

The Originals

I wanted the first pair of safety glasses to be classic and to suit as many people as possible. The Originals was inspired by the shape of Ray Bans Wayfarer but with the elements required to meet safety standards.

The next step was ordering samples. That was a huge step for me. Would they look as good as the design? Would they be comfortable? and of course do they meet the drop ball test and meet the safety standards?

When the samples arrived, I put them on and new instantly that I had my first pair of EMU Safety Glasses.

The true test was seeing them in the 'wild' as I like to say, at the work site, mine site, beach, park or pub. The unisex frames can be worn anywhere and by anyone.

The EMU name

EMU Safety is an Australian brand and I wanted something that resinated with what I was trying to achieve.

Emu's can only walk forward, have excellent vision and are iconically Australian.

And so EMU Safety was born, or hatched as I like to say.

It didn't take long for word to get out about EMU Safety glasses!

The EMU tube

I wanted the packaging to stand out from traditional safety glasses, so instead of a clear plastic packet. All EMU Safety Glasses arrive in an EMU tube.

I created the EMU tube, similar in colour to an emu egg. The tubes are made from cardboard and symbolize our commitment to the environment.

Every pair of glasses comes with a dust bag and EMU Safety sticker.

The Future

Today EMU Safety provides a range of comfortable and stylish safety glasses shipped all of the world.

EMU Safety glasses meet the safety standards for the USA, Australia and New Zealand. EMU Safety has now expanded into the USA and Canada.

I am so proud of what we have achieved and I have some exciting projects currently in the research and development phase which I can't wait to share with you.
